For modern enterprises, onboarding new talent involves more than imparting foundational knowledge—enhancing functional hands-on experience and mastering specialized industry nuances are critical factors for success. Guidance from seasoned veterans enables new employees to navigate job roles more efficiently. Last year, the New Taipei City Hulao LOHAS Home-Based Long-Term Care Institution applied for the "Grant Program for Employers Hiring Retired Senior Citizens to Pass On Professional Expertise and Experience" through the Senior Citizen Human Resources Center (under the North-Keelung-Yilan-Hualien-Chinmen-Matsu Regional Branch, Workforce Development Agency, Ministry of Labor). Through this program, they retained Ms. Huang, a retired specialist, as an internal long-term care trainer. She designed tailored courses covering fall prevention care techniques and pressure ulcer management, aiming to pass the torch of professional knowledge to the next generation.
Now 72, Ms. Huang has dedicated her entire career to the long-term care sector. Drawing on nearly 30 years of extensive field experience, she structured a comprehensive curriculum to provide home care workers with holistic training. Ms. Huang shared: "Frontline caregivers demonstrate remarkable dedication in class, actively bringing real-world operational challenges to discussion. For instance, while standard training focuses on repositioning bedridden elderly patients to prevent bedsores, I teach techniques that help patients transition from long-term bed rest to a sitting position. When caregivers applied this in practice the following day and succeeded, it gave them a immense sense of professional accomplishment. Passing on this experience is my personal mission—to elevate long-term care standards in Taiwan." As demand for long-term care continues to expand, Ms. Huang’s mentorship is helping build a highly competent, field-ready talent pool.
Director Ai-Chun Yu of the Senior Citizen Human Resources Center highlighted that professional experience is the most valuable educational asset. The "Grant Program for Employers Hiring Retired Senior Citizens to Pass On Professional Expertise and Experience" encourages enterprises to retain retired senior experts as internal instructors. By facilitating knowledge transfer, businesses can significantly reduce onboarding and training costs for new talent while preserving valuable institutional wisdom. Employers hiring retired senior experts to deliver practical technical guidance or serve as corporate trainers can receive up to NT$ 500,000 in annual subsidies per company. Applications for the 2023 program are open through the end of June.
